The Test Is What Happens Next — 2026-10-24
The difficult thing about a useful idea isn't believing it. It's deciding what to do when it stops producing the results you expected. Persistence can be the difference between a breakthrough and a failed experiment. It can also become a costly way of protecting a mistake. We admire people who hold their convictions, but we rarely ask what evidence would justify changing them. And while a new idea can be exciting, the less glamorous question is whether anyone can make it work beyond a demonstration. Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn argued about that tension from different sides of the philosophy of science. In our imagined debate, Alzheimer's research becomes the setting: is a longstanding research framework an engine of cumulative progress, or can it become an institution's favorite excuse for disappointment? The answer isn't a simple victory for disruption or tradition. Good criticism requires better tests, and useful persistence requires a willingness to learn from failure. The same distinction between a plausible claim and a tested result appears in personal finance, business and technology. Negotiation begins by recognizing the alternatives we still have. Markets put corporate plans under pressure as economic evidence arrives. Even our fictional meeting agents become brilliant at repeating a process nobody needs. And Max Tishler's career reminds us that scientific discovery isn't delivery: someone still has to find a process that turns possibility into everyday availability. Sometimes the vital insight is to change the theory. Sometimes it's to change how the theory gets used.
