Who Gets to Choose? — 2026-10-31
A choice can feel personal while the conditions around it have already been decided by somebody else. The menu, the default, the information that arrives first, the cost of changing direction: all of these shape the decisions we call our own. And the most powerful systems often work best when we don't notice them at all. That distinction runs through this week's stories. Technology companies are investing vast sums to anticipate our next preferences, while ports and championship venues reveal the bottlenecks beneath apparently strong demand. A documentary draws an unlikely theatrical crowd, while bacteria continue making useful molecules after the cells die. Markets offer another daily demonstration: a number matters less than the expectations embedded in it and the second-order consequences when reality diverges. The same is true of reputation. The cost of dealing with someone depends on how much independent checking we believe their promises require. In The Greater Debate, Jaron Lanier and Cass Sunstein collide over whether algorithmic social-media recommendations ought to require explicit permission or arrive as a reversible default. Their disagreement makes the architecture of choice visible. In Let's Invent Again, Henry Timken confronts an earlier and more physical constraint: the wheel could rotate, but the forces of a turn still threatened to destroy it. Changing the bearing changed what the whole vehicle could do. The question isn't whether we should make choices. It's whether we understand who built the conditions in which we make them.
