Building a Community Before There Is Member-to-Member Value

Type: warning

Stage: Stage 9: Community Proof

Difficulty: beginner

A founder announcement channel is not a community. If every post, answer, and discussion depends on the founder, the community is an audience — and audiences do not generate Community Proof.

Overview

A founder announcement channel is not a community.

Avoid when

Every post, answer, and discussion depends on the founder. If removing the founder from the community for one week would cause all activity to stop, the community is not self-sustaining. It is an audience with a Slack wrapper.

Better signal

Users answer each other, share workflows, recommend resources, and create value without waiting for founder prompts. This takes time and the right members — which is why the inner circle approach (20–50 highly engaged users) is more useful than trying to activate a large passive audience. Launch small, activate deeply.
