Endorser-Persona Mismatch
Type: warning
Stage: Stage 9: Community Proof
Difficulty: intermediate
A testimonial from the wrong person can weaken trust. Proof from someone who doesn't look like the buyer raises doubt instead of credibility.
Overview
A testimonial from the wrong person can weaken trust.
Avoid when
You sell to enterprise operators but highlight praise from students, hobbyists, or unrelated users. The buyer's first thought is: 'This is built for someone else.' The endorser-persona mismatch is a Stage 9 failure mode because the wrong advocate can reduce credibility instead of increasing it.
Better signal
Proof from someone who looks like the buyer, has the buyer's problem, and operates in the buyer's context. 'I'm a [role] at a [size] company and I was using [workaround] before this' is the sentence structure to aim for. The testimonial should function as an identification moment: the buyer sees themselves.
