Overview
Stripe Smart Retries is the payment recovery tool every Stripe subscriber should have enabled, and most don't. It's a machine-learning system built into Stripe's billing infrastructure that automatically selects the optimal time to retry a failed charge — based on patterns from hundreds of millions of transactions across the entire Stripe network. It is free. It is already built into your Stripe account. You activate it in two minutes. On average, it recovers 38% of charges that fail on the first attempt.
What it does
When a subscription charge fails, Stripe's default behavior is a simple retry at a fixed interval. Smart Retries replaces this with an intelligent retry schedule that analyzes the failure reason, the customer's payment history, and global network patterns to identify the best time for a retry. A card declined for "insufficient funds" on a Friday is more likely to succeed on a Monday when the customer's paycheck has cleared. Smart Retries factors this in automatically.
It is not a replacement for a full dunning system — it doesn't send customer emails or provide recovery analytics. But it is the baseline that every Stripe-based subscription product should have running before anything else.
How to activate it at Stage 5
Log into Stripe. Go to Settings → Billing → Smart Retries. Toggle it on. Done.
This two-minute action is the highest-ROI thing you can do for revenue recovery today. If you haven't done it yet, stop reading and do it now.
What to watch
In your Stripe dashboard, under Billing → Overview, you'll see a "Revenue recovered" figure that shows how much Smart Retries has saved from failed charges. Check this monthly. If you're seeing recovery rates below 20%, consider adding a dunning tool like ChurnWard or Baremetrics Recover on top of Smart Retries to capture the failures that require customer action (expired cards, insufficient funds) rather than just timing retries.
